Isiodos, the great Greek poet, was the first who mentioned this kind of sweet wine and its production process, twenty eight centuries ago. It is important to stress that today's production process of commandaria is that same process to the one described by Isiodos.

This Cypriot dessert wine become first know in Europe as “Commandaria”, a name taken after the knights of St. john, who set up their headquarters “Grand Commandaria” at Kolossi.

Commandaria was exported and widely consumed by Royals and rulers in all civilized regions. There was a growing demand of this wine with exports to all commerce centers like Venice , Genova, Trieste , Smyrne , Syria , Egypt and Constantinopole.

Today Commandaria is still produced in the same traditional way. Its reputation expands worldwide with a considerable number of awards by the biggest international wine magazines.
